X-Box 360… Back In Black

Posted in Tech Industy News, Gaming Gadgets by Ryan on March 29th, 2007

After more rumours (and denials) than you can shake a stick at, Microsoft have officially announced the new Xbox 360 Elite, and somehow managed to leave us with more questions than answers. What we can safely tell you is that it’s got an HDMI port, comes with a 120GB HDD…and it’s black.

There’s no official word on which revision of HDMI was used, so we can’t tell you anything more than ‘it’ll do 1080p.’ Given how chuffed some PlayStation 3 owners are with the HDMI 1.3 port in their consoles, we’d be surprised if Microsoft dropped the ball on this one.

The 120GB hard drive finally gives users the space to store decent amounts of HD video content alongside the gigabytes of game demos and Live Arcade games that once fought for the prior 20GB. A cable will be included to transfer data from an existing 20GB drive to the new 120GB drive.

We’ve heard mixed reports regarding whether the Elite will be a permanent SKU, or a limited-edition run for the upgrade-junkies and collectors before the existing Premium console absorbs the HDMI port and larger HDD.

The Xbox 360 Elite will be released in the US on April 29th and will cost US$479. The 120GB HDD will be available seperately and cost $179.

Eavesdrop Covertly On Those At Home

Posted in Cool Inventions by Ryan on March 26th, 2007

Some answering machines contain a pretty cool feature that enables you to call your home, key in a special code, and eavesdrop on whatever is happening within the house without anyone else being the wiser for it. The TeleSpy Intrusion Detection phone goes one up on this concept by offering a built-in audio and motion sensor, taking the proactive step of calling you whenever it detects any sound or motion to keep you updated on whatever is going on in your pad. Here we are crossing our figures for a webcam-enabled version which could not come any sooner. The TeleSpy Intrusion Detection phone retails for $64.99.

What to get the immortal being that has everything.

The Long Now Foundation, a group formed as a response to the current culture’s obsession with the ephemeral, has designed a what they call The Clock of the Long Now. This timepiece, which looks like something out of an old science fiction movie, keeps ticks along not to seconds or minutes or hours, but to the passing years and is meant to be functional for the next 10,000 years. Amazingly ambitious, considering technology these days is dismissed as obsolete within six months.

This large list of technological considerations shows that designing something mechanical that will continue to function through such a unheard of range of time is, obviously , a monumental task.

A shame we’ll all be dead and have no way of knowing if any of these projects worked.

Carry Files and Stay Hygienic with No Fear of Electrocution

I’ve seen some bizarre USB devices in my time, and this one doesn’t disappoint.

I am 99% sure that I’ve never thought to myself, while shaving, that it would be just perfect if I could carry some mp3s or maybe a few video files on the same device. In fact, shaving is so far down on my list of favourite activities that I’m usually thinking of nothing so much as getting it over with as fast as possible.

Of course, if someone made a USB straight razor, I’d be all over that. That would be so hot, in a steampunk sort of way.

Need A Little Help On You SATs?

Posted in Neato Gadgets by Ryan on March 12th, 2007

With SAT testing just around the corner, high school students everywhere are burning the midnight oil trying to cram all that information into their burned out lil’ heads. For those that need a little boost in memory, here are some cool gadgets that might just slip by undetected:

ink2

These are perfect for writing down things you need in exam.Ink is invisible to the naked eye, but magically illuminate when exposed to a blacklight.A blacklight is conveniently located on the opposite end of the pen.

calc2

Programmable calculators can hold text, formulas, even pictures.Texas Instruments says its TI-83 Plus is the “top choice among U.S. high school students,” and I can see why. Add-on memory lets you store software, turning your calculator into a pocket notebook. (And the company is happy to point out that the TI-83 Plus is “allowed for use on the PSAT, SAT I, SAT II Math IC and IIC, AP Chemistry exam, AP Physics exam, and AP Calculus exam.”)

need some more helpful tools? Head on over here!

(just remember, it is not cheating as long as you are not caught)
