Magnetic Liquid

Posted in Cool Videos by Eric on November 20th, 2006

See, this one of those things they just have to turn into a toy. They could sell it on ThinkGeek and hordes of bored workers would buy a set to play with while avoiding work. Inevitably, people would find ways to display internet porn through the liquid.

Then people would start hacking the magnetic liquid to do things no one had thought of before and then someone would figure out a way to get their magnetic mass running a special distribution of Linux made solely for liquids and next thing you now there’d be huge magnetic monsters shooting their gray tendrils through people’s bodies and I totally need to focus and stop being annoyed that I was unable to secure a Wii for myself yesterday.

But yeah, the video is cool, check it out.

How Much Does A PS3 System Really Cost?

Posted in Cool Gadget News, Gaming Gadgets by Ryan on November 17th, 2006

ArsTechnica reports on market research from iSuppli on the breakdown of how much a PlayStation 3 console really costs to make.  The results are quite astonishing!

“Describing the PS3 as an “engineering masterpiece,” iSuppli estimates that the more expensive $599 console costs $840.35 to build, leaving Sony with a $241.35 loss on each console. The picture is worse for the cheaper, $499 version. Sony takes a hit of $306.85 per $499 console sold, due primarily to the lack of any substantial savings from the hardware differences between the two versions of the PS3. For instance, the 40GB difference in hard drive space between the two versions of the PS3 only saves Sony $11 and omitting 802.11b/g on the cheaper console only saves Sony an additional $15.50.”

For those who love charts, here is the full breakdown from iSuppli:

Finding a Wii

Posted in Gaming Gadgets by Eric on November 17th, 2006

Hoping to pick up a Wii on the 19th? You might need a bit of help.

Wiiloaded has written a short but thorough guide to finding a Wii that might be of help. It offers specific information about how different stores will be handling the release and also more general tips on how you might get your gnarled gamer’s hands on one of these babies before the holidays.

Wii's Release Date in the US

Although, if you just want one to sell it on eBay or something, then you can shove the Wiimote where the infrared don’t shine.

Thinking of getting a Zune?

Posted in Cool Gadget News, Gadget Information by Eric on November 16th, 2006

Tired of rabid iPod fanatics who believe technology ends at Apple? Sick of people waving their little white boxes around as if anyone really gives a damn? Or maybe just have money to blow and want to try something different?

The Microsoft Zune

Well, in that case, the gadget freaks at Gizmodo have some extensive coverage of Microsoft’s recently released Zune.

First, you can read the full review of the player.

Still think that you need to have an iPod to be accepted by society as a whole? Then here’s a comparison of the two players.

A digital audio player is nothing without a good interface to your PC, so here is a comparison of iTunes and Zune Software (come on, that’s what they call it?). Here is a an image of the two interfaces side-by-side captured by someone at Gizmodo who likes The Killers just a wee bit too much.

Too lazy to read through all of that and just want some straightforward questions answered? This Zune Q&A might be just what you want.

And, finally, if you get off on unboxing porn, then this dirty Zune on Zune unboxing gallery is just for you. Eww, I bet they’re wirelessly sharing more than just files in this one.

Non-Newtonian Fluid Fun

Posted in Cool Projects by Eric on November 15th, 2006

So apparently mixing a certain combination of cornstarch and water allows you to create a non-Newtonian fluid. That’s fine and all, but when you turn said non-Newtonian fluid into a fun variety show activity, you get this:

That looks like way too much fun. I’m off to the store to pick up the largest kiddie pool I can find. Where the heck would I find large amounts of cornstarch at this hour of the night?

Edit: Here are some more videos of non-Newtonian videos doing wacky things.

Yes, I know the video is in Spanish, but who cares, they’re freaking walking on water!

The Japanese company ELPH has created two atmosphere detecting balls that will interpret the sounds around them and change colors accordingly.  Remember mood rings?  Now prepare for mood balls.  Americans may never get a chance to pick one of these up at their local Spencers, but in this day and age, worldwide purchasing has never been easier.
